Box Score 2 FRANKLIN, Wis. – Sophomore Ryan Newman threw a three-hit shutout to lead the MSOE baseball team to a 5-0 win in game two and a doubleheader split with Finlandia Sunday afternoon at The Rock Complex.
The Raiders (7-9) bounced back from a game-one 2-1 loss to blank the Lions (3-9) in game two.
Newman (1-1) struck out eight and walked just one in the game, throwing just 98 pitches for the team's first shutout of the season. He finished strong, striking out five of the last seven batters he faced and allowed just one runner to reach second base in the game.
It was the longest start of Newman's career, surpassing the seven innings he threw at Benedictine last season. It was also the first time he struck out more than four batters in an appearance.
Sophomore Owen Burnikel spurred the offense on, lacing a bases-loaded triple to center field to break a 0-0 tie in the sixth inning. Two walks and a single had loaded the bases for Burnikel. He then came in to score on a ground out by senior Casey Magyar to make it 4-0.
The Raiders tacked on another run in the seventh, capitalizing on a lead-off error with back-to-back singles. Freshman Nick Gross then lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to score senior Tyler Doyle from third.
Doyle and senior Ryan Miller had two hits apiece in the game, while sophomore Garrett Willems reached base four times on three walks and a hit.
Pitching highlighted the day, as sophomore Michael Boehmer (2-2) had a strong outing go for naught in game one. He threw 7.1 innings in the opener, conceding just one earned run with six strikeouts. He scattered six hits and walked just two, but was handed a hard-luck loss as the Lions' Luke Paul (2-1) countered with a complete-game effort.
FU struck first with an unearned run in the first inning, but MSOE quickly pulled that run back in its half of the frame on a single through the left side by sophomore Jimmy Carrington. Newman walked to lead off the inning, stole second and came around to score on the hit.
In the third inning, Finlandia loaded the bases on the first three batters of the frame. Luke then followed with an RBI double, but the Raiders threw out a second runner attempting to score at the plate. Newman then caught Paul off second base on an inning-ending 6-3 double play to escape any further damage.
That would be all the offense Paul needed as he worked around six hits, six walks and two hit batters to keep MSOE off the board after the first inning. He struck out eight and threw 156 pitches in the game.
Miller and Carrington both reached base twice in the first game on a single and a walk each.
Freshman Sam Crawford relieved Boehmer in the eighth and closed down the game with 1.2 innings of hitless work and two strikeouts.
The Raiders now have a break before returning to action with the start of NACC play April 2 at Benedictine.
