Box Score 2 FRANKLIN, Wis. – Sophomore Jimmy Carrington hit a walk-off single in game on and the MSOE baseball team combined on a one-hit shutout in game two to sweep Maranatha in a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at The Rock Complex.
The Raiders (13-11) rallied to win game one 2-1 in nine innings on a walk-off single from Carrington. Three pitchers then combined to allow the Sabercats (5-10) just one hit in a 5-0 win in game two.
The sweep pushed MSOE's winning streak to five-straight games, its longest winning run since a seven-game win streak from April 27-May 1, 2013.
Sophomore Owen Burnikel started the day's pitching excellence in game one with 7.2 innings of work. He scattered seven hits and struck out nine in his first collegiate start. The only blemish on his day was a second-inning home run by MBU's Micah Burdett.
Burdett's opposite field home run was the games lone run until MSOE rallied in the seventh. Senior Tyler Doyle led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Carrington then followed with a single to put Doyle on third and sophomore Garrett Willems scored him with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Sabercats threatened in the eighth inning, stringing together back-to-back hits with two outs. Freshman Austin Heyman relieved Burnikel and, after an infield single loaded the bases, he got a strikeout to get out of danger.
Burnikel had retired 12-straight batters before the two singles in the eighth.
The Raiders won it in the ninth, loading the bases when the first three hitters reached on a hit batter, double and infield single. Carrington then followed with a deep single over the drawn in outfield to score the decisive run.
Heyman (1-0) struck out three in just 1.1 innings of work to get the win.
Carrington finished with three hits in the opener.
In game two, sophomore Matt Melbye (1-0) got the start on the mound and threw four strong innings. He allowed just one hit and two walks for the win before giving way to the bullpen. Freshman Matt Mohapp struck out two in two perfect innings and Doyle tossed a perfect ninth as the final 12 MBU batters of the day were retired.
At the plate, the team did not wait until the end to score, plating a run on an RBI double by Willems in the first and two more in the second on RBI singles by sophomore Max Kemp and Carrington to make it 3-0.
The Red & White scored a couple insurance runs in the fifth inning with a run-scoring double by Burnikel and a single by senior Ryan Miller to score Burnikel.
Seven different Raiders collected the team's seven hits in game two with Carrington extending his hitting streak to 14 games with his base hit in the second inning.
