Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Florida – Junior Michael Boehmer went the distance in game one and struck out seven as the MSOE baseball team earned a doubleheader split with Waynesburg on its second day of the RussMatt Invitational.
The Raiders (1-3) won game one 8-3 behind Boehmer's strong outing but were nipped late in the second game by the Yellow Jackets (1-4) in a 5-1 loss.
Boehmer (1-0) worked around nine hits and a pair of walks to allow just two earned runs in the game.
At the plate, freshman Julian Sonn went 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored, and two runs batted in. Juniors Jimmy Carrington and Max Kemp finished with two hits each with Carrington scoring three runs.
Carrington scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning. He reached on an error with one out and the score tied at 3-3. He moved up to third after a wild pitch and a ground out. The designated hitter then came around to score on a Sonn single.
The Raiders then put the game out of reach with a four-run seventh inning. Freshman D.J. Ellifson led off with a walk and Carrington singled two batters later. McCumber followed with an RBI double and Sonn singled in another run after that. Both hitters then came around to score on wild pitches.
Waynesburg had struck first in the opening inning, scoring one run on a fielder's choice and tacking on another run courtesy of an error on the play.
Sonn started the rally that got those runs right back, leading off the second inning with a single. After a Yellow Jacket error put another runner on, both Raiders moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Junior Owen Burnikel then plated a run with a sacrifice fly and Kemp tied the game with a single down the right field line.
MSOE took the lead its next time up in the third. Carrington hit a one-out double and scored three batters later on a single by junior Garrett Willems to make it 3-2. The lead was short-lived as a lead-off double in the third came around to score and level the game once again.
In game two, junior Brandon Rankila had a solid MSOE debut with 4.2 innings of work in which he allowed just one run.
Despite that, Waynesburg led 1-0 heading into the fourth inning when senior Brandon McCumber led off with a single to left field. He was moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt and then to third on a double by freshman Joe Gilpin. Junior Matt Melbye then plated the tying run with a single to right field, but Gilpin was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second.
The score remained tied until the Yellow Jackets pulled ahead with two unearned runs after the Raiders committed back-to-back errors to lead off the inning. WU would then add on two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
Freshman Justin Celeski (0-1) suffered the loss with 1.2 innings of work. He allowed two earned runs and three hits. Senior John Dzurka closed out the game with a scoreless 0.2 innings.
The Raiders are back in action Tuesday with a doubleheader against Concordia-Moorhead. First pitch of game one is at 10:30 a.m.
