Boehmer, Mohapp Each Shut Out Finlandia in Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

MAUSTON, Wisconsin – Junior Michael Boehmer and sophomore Matt Mohapp each hurled seven-inning shutouts as the MSOE baseball team swept Finlandia 9-0 and 2-0 Sunday afternoon at the Woodside Sports Complex.

The Raiders (5-7) allowed just seven hits over 14 innings against the Lions (2-10) after playing 25 innings over two games against Beloit Saturday.

Boehmer (2-1) struck out nine and allowed just five hits and one walk in game one. Meanwhile, the Red & White reached double-digits in hits for the fourth-straight game with 15.

Not to be outdone, Mohapp (1-1) struck out 12 against two walks with just two hits allowed in game two. It was the most strikeouts by a Raider pitcher since Jake Lathers struck out 12 Finlandia hitters, also in just 7.0 innings, April 22, 2009.

MSOE wasted no time getting the scoring started on the day, breaking through for its first run on the second hitter of game one as part of a four-run first inning. Senior Brandon McCumber led the game off with a double and scored on sophomore Nick Gross' single up the middle. Four hitters later, freshman Julian Sonn and sophomore Andres Oselio posted back-to-back run-scoring singles. The final run came in on an E-5.

Sonn doubled in another run and another error allowed the Raiders to pad their lead to 6-0 in the third inning. Junior Ryan Newman then tacked on another run in the fifth with an RBI double and Sonn was back at it with a run-scoring since in the sixth.

Gross capped the scoring in the seventh, ending the game as he started it—by driving in McCumber.

The Red & White had six of the nine starters collect at least two hits. Sonn went 3-for-3 with a walk, three runs scored, and three more driven in. Gross also tallied three hits in the game. Oselio followed up a five-hit performance in game two Saturday with a pair of hits in this game, as well. McCumber, Newman, and junior Owen Burnikel also had two hits each.

Game two shaped up to be a pitcher's duel, as Mohapp scattered his four base runners over four different innings. At one point, he retired nine-straight batters which included a run of four-straight strikeouts. He also retired the lead-off hitter in every inning, including six via the strikeout.

Meanwhile, Aaron Froelich (1-2) countered Mohapp for Finlandia and only allowed five hits and a walk. He was charged with two runs and just one earned.

MSOE capitalized on a Lions error to get on the board in the second inning. A lead-off miscue came around to score freshman Ryan Kocher's RBI single to left field. Sonn then drove in his fourth run of the day for an insurance run in the sixth inning. He plated Carrington, who had drawn a lead-off walk.

McCumber knocked out two more hits in a more subdued offensive performance in game two.

The two shutouts marked the first time in over 15 years that the Raiders posted two shutouts in one day. It was their first time since April 3-5, 2005 that they had tossed back-to-back shutouts.

MSOE returns to the field next Sunday for its home opener, when it hosts Illinois Tech for two games at The Rock Complex.
