MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's hockey team wrapped up their two-game series against the Thunder of Trine University on Saturday afternoon as the Red and White took the game to overtime before falling in the shootout 1-0.
FINAL SCORE
MSOE RAIDERS – 1
Trine University - 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After another scoreless first period, Trine (2-2-2, 2-2-2 NCHA) capitalized in the second, going up 1-0 with an extra attacker on the ice after a delayed cross-checking penalty was assessed to the Raiders with just over three minutes to play in the period. Freshman goalie Alexa Novak kept the Raiders competitive in her first career start, recording 28 saves on 29 shots faced.
- As time began to wind down in the third period, the Raiders began to build momentum on the offensive end, outshooting the Thunder in the final frame of regulation 12 to 7. Stacey Cloute came through in the clutch for the Raiders, weaving into the offensive zone and netting an unassisted goal, the first of her career, to knot things up at 1-1 with just over five minutes left to play. 60 minutes would not be enough to determine a winner, as the Thunder and Raiders were earmarked for overtime..
- In overtime, the Raiders and Thunder each had their chances, with the Red and White nearly finding the back of the net with under two minutes to play. The Thunder goalie stopped a shot from Helen Bechthold in desperation attempt before Amy MacDonalddrew pipe on a picture-perfect chance.
- The Thunder and Raiders would go to a shootout in front of the Kern Center faithful, as Trine edged out the Raiders 1-0 after three shots apiece.
