Raiders Finish Split in Dramatic Fashion

Leesburg, Fla. – MSOE softball dropped a tough matchup to an explosive Simpson team, before winning a thriller against the University of Chicago on a walk-off home run to split their doubleheader.

RESULTS
Simpson College – 14
MSOE RAIDERS – 5

MSOE RAIDERS – 4
University of Chicago – 3

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vs Simpson College
    • The Raiders found themselves in trouble early after Whitney Ruffcorn issued three walks to start the game, before Simpson capitalized on a Raider throwing error to bring home two on a single.  After surrendering a three-run homer, Ruffcorn recorded a strikeout to get back on track, before forcing some weak contact to get out of the inning as the Raiders fell behind 5-0.
    • The Raiders would put runs on the board in the top of the second as Jocelyn Clodi went yard to bring the score to 5-2. Simpson would add three more runs in the bottom of the second as Katie Pollock entered in relief to try and slow the Storm offense.  The Raiders would cut the deficit to three after a Jayda Nelson single in the third and a Jenna O'Donnell 2-run homerun, but Simpson would score six runs in the bottom of the fifth to run-rule the Raiders.
  • Vs University of Chicago
    • The Raiders trailed the Maroons before a Clodi triple brought home the first Raider run, followed up by a single from Caroline Fouras brought the tying run, tying things up at 2-2.
    • After a scoreless fifth inning the Raiders broke through at the plate with discipline, loading the bases after Celine Pacheco and Sadie Gaberell both drew walks and Carlee Emery reached on an error.  Fouras drew yet another walk to bring Pacheco home and give the Raiders a 3-2 lead.
    • After the Maroons took advantage of a Raiders fielding error to tie the game up, the Raiders were set up for a dramatic finish in the bottom of the seventh.  Jenna Trewyn found herself down 0-2 and with one swing of the bat brought home a 4-3 Raider victory thanks to a clutch homerun to dead center when her team needed it most.
