Softballs Splits with Spartans in Aurora

AURORA, Ill. – The MSOE softball team split their doubleheader against the Aurora Spartans on Saturday afternoon, as the Red and White emerged victorious a low-scoring first leg of the twin bill.

RESULTS

MSOE RAIDERS – 2
Aurora University - 1

MSOE RAIDERS - 1
Aurora University - 9

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game One
    • MSOE (5-19, 2-8 NACC) and Aurora (13-9, 5-3 NACC) were scoreless through the first five innings of play, with both teams combining for six hits through the first five frames.  In the top of the sixth inning, singles from Caroline Fouras and Jayda Nelson set up Carlee Emery for the go-ahead RBI single, with Lylah DeArmond adding a sacrifice fly to give the Red and White a 2-0 lead.
    • Katie Pollock would post a complete-game effort, recording four strikeouts and zero walks across seven innings of work.  In the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans would threaten after a two-out RBI tripled brought home an Aurora run, but Pollock would force a line drive right to Fouras for the final out in another win for the Raiders.
  • Game Two
    • In game two, both teams remained scoreless through the first two frames, before the Spartans tagged the Red and White for four runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the third, with Aurora building their lead to 7-0 after another rally in the fourth.  After a double from DeArmond led off the fifth inning, an RBI single from Olivia Beals put the Raiders on the board, but the Spartans would walk things off in the bottom of the inning in a run-rule shortened game two.
