MSOE Takes Down #16 Augustana In Double Overtime

Box Score

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Freshman Erika Spanbauer (Oshkosh, Wis. / West) scored in the 102nd minute to propel the MSOE women's soccer team to a 2-1 upset of No. 16 Augustana Wednesday evening at MSOE Field.

The Raiders (4-6) defeated a nationally-ranked Vikings (7-1-2) side for the second-straight season after a 2-1 win in Rock Island, Ill., last season against then-No. 15 AC.

The game-deciding play got started on the far end of the penalty area, where freshman Sara Travia (Glendale, Wis. / Nicolet) took on a pair of defenders. She broke free and lofted a cross to the far post where Spanbauer was to finish and set off a celebration from the Raider bench.

Her first career score capped an entertaining contest between the teams that featured a number of dangerous ventures forward by both sides. It was a rhythm of the match that lasted throughout. Despite a 17-8 shot advantage for the visitors, MSOE also got forward for a number of extended offensive possessions.

The match became more wide open after halftime and turned into a back and forth affair, as each team was able to find the back of the net. The Vikings broke the scoreless tie in the 56th when Somer Druszkowski collected a loose ball at the top of the Red and White penalty area and blasted a shot high and just under the cross bar for the 1-0 lead.

The Raiders would get that goal just about 14 minutes later. After a dangerous cross through the box got cleared, junior Shelby Struble (Steamboat Springs, Colo. / Steamboat Springs) reintroduced the ball into the box and it got worked to senior Paula Bohl (Muskego, Wis. / Muskego), who was taken down by the keeper for a penalty kick.

Sophomore Caitlin Liddiard (Waukesha, Wis. / South) calmly stepped to the penalty spot and converted for her second goal of the season and the equalizer.

Freshman Sydney Stephens (Chesterfield, Mo. / Parkway Central) played strong in goal, making seven saves. She made a dynamic save in the 50th minute, leaping towards the upper 90 to deflect a hard shot off the crossbar.

The Raiders return to action Saturday, hosting Wisconsin Lutheran at MSOE Field, starting at 3:30 p.m.
