Box Score MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Natalie Gayner scored the game's lone goal in the 63rd minute to lift the MSOE women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Alverno Tuesday afternoon at Alverno Field.
The Raiders (6-6, 4-1 NACC) reached .500 on the season with the victory and they retained the Red Rivalry Cup—the traveling trophy involved in the crosstown matchup with the Inferno (5-5, 1-4 NACC).
MSOE controlled the pace of play and dominated possession throughout the match. Despite a 22-2 shot advantage and 13 corner kicks, the Raiders were unable to break through against a stingy Alverno defense until the second half.
Freshman Sara Travia, got the scoring play rolling. She fended off an Inferno defender in the box, spun and laid off a ball for Gayner. The AC keeper shifted her focus to Travia, leaving the net open for Gayner's fourth goal of the season.
The Red and White put 10 of its shots on frame, by Samantha Robinson made nine saves for Alverno to keep the game tight.
Freshman Sydney Stephens played in goal for the Raiders, but got help from her defense on the Inferno's lone shot on goal. She closed on an on-coming attacker in the 39th minute, who touched the ball past her towards the open goal. Senior Allison Zimont swooped in and cleared the ball off the line to keep the game scoreless.
The Raiders take a break from conference play their next time out, hosting former conference foe Maranatha Thursday. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 pm. at MSOE Field.
