Box Score FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Marian ended the game on 15-3 run to overcome a late Raider lead and hand the MSOE men's basketball team its first loss of the season, 62-53, Tuesday evening at Sadoff Gymnasium.
The Raiders (3-1, 1-1 NACC) were held to less than 50 percent shooting for the first time this season, while the Sabres (3-3, 2-0 NACC) held a decisive 39-26 rebounding advantage to pull away late.
Sophomore Austin Stueck scored a game-high 18 points for MSOE. Sophomore Connor Patterson added nine points and junior Jeremiah Erdmann scored eight.
Marian put three players in double-figures, led by Sam Koslowski's 14. Cody Veleke scored 12 and blocked four shots, while and Montrell Hobbs tallied 10 points off the bench.
MSOE led by as many as eight in the first half, but was tangled in a back-and-forth opening frame. The Red and White took a 29-26 lead into halftime and scored the first four points of the second half to push the lead back to seven at 35-28 at 17:55.
Marian responded with a 12-0 run over a two-plus minute stretch to take the lead at 40-35. The Raiders responded with seven-straight points, beginning with a three-point play by freshman Dylan Sommerfeld. The teams traded buckets until the 8:33 mark when MSOE led 50-47 after another three-point play, this time by Stueck.
Once again, the Sabres went on a run, this time ending the game with a 15-3 stretch to pull away and fend off the visitors. The Raiders hit on just 1-of-10 from the field in that time and committed five turnovers.
MSOE entered the night 14th in the nation with a 52.8 field goal percentage through three games, but was held 38.8 percent shooting on the night. Marian shot 44 percent from the field, but battled for a +13 rebounding margin to keep the Red and White at bay.
The Raiders have a couple days off before returning to the court, and the road, Thursday evening at Edgewood. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Madison.
