Raiders Drop Pair At Home Triangular

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The MSOE women's volleyball team hosted a triangular Wednesday at the Kern Center, dropping a pair of matches to Wisconsin Lutheran and Lawrence.

The Raiders (3-4) saw their three-match winning streak snapped in the first match of the day, a 3-2 (21-25, 23-25, 25-22, 31-29, 16-14) loss to WLC (2-3). Then, after a break, MSOE came up short against the Vikings (3-3) in four sets (25-14, 25-20, 18-25, 25-22).

In the first match, the Raiders jumped out to 2-0 lead after a pair of tightly-played sets. In the second set, the Warriors went ahead 21-18 on a 6-1 run, but MSOE responded with a 6-1 run of its own and closed out the frame.

WLC rebounded to win the third set 25-22 before a marathon set No. 4 that the Warriors went on to win 31-29. MSOE led 23-16, but the visitors responded with a 7-0 run to level the score. After seven set points, including three match points for the Red and White, it succumbed and a fifth set was play.

The final set was just as tight as the preceding four, as there were five ties, including 14-14 after a 3-0 Raider run to stave off WLC. Unfortunately, the Warriors closed out the match with kills by Kelli Johnson and Erin Greenfield.

The Raiders had three players with double-digits in kills and five get at least 10+ digs. Freshman Sarabeth Haworth (Colorado Springs, Co./Mesa Ridge) had 13 kills and 22 digs to lead the way. Junior Ali Borrelli (Manhattan, Ill./Peotone ) had 35 assists and 23 kills, while junior libero Ali LeBue (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) tallied 22 digs.

For Wisconsin Lutheran, Greenfield led the team with 20 kills and 23 digs. Alexis Hafemeister had 54 assists and 10 digs and Kayla Ridgeman finished with 31 digs.

In the second match, the Raiders just couldn't slow down the Viking attack. Lawrence hit .419 over the first two sets to take a 2-0 lead. MSOE fought back for a win in set three, limiting LU to .094 hitting, but could not pull out the match win despite a strong showing in the final set.

Haworth posted her second double-double of the day against the Vikings with 14 kills and 13 digs to lead the Red and White.

MSOE returns to action next Tuesday, Sept. 10, playing at Wisconsin Lutheran in the NACC opener for both teams.
