Raiders Rally to Down Inferno in Four

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Sophomores Sarabeth Haworth and Maria Bintz had 17 kills apiece and finished with double-doubles to lead the MSOE women's volleyball team to a 23-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-21 victory over Alverno Friday evening at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (8-10, 3-2 NACC) rebounded from an opening set loss to sweep the final three from the Inferno (9-13, 0-6 NACC) to take the match.

Haworth added 18 digs, while Bintz had 12 digs and three service aces. Junior Kasey Mylin finished with 11 kills, hit .455 and led MSOE on the block with three solo and five block assists. The team tallied 13 total blocks in the match, including four block assists each from Haworth and Bintz.

Freshman Abby Born dished out 46 assists in the four sets, while fellow rookie Aleah Quast added 15 digs and senior Amy Gustafson chipped in 10.

Emily Ortner and Jessica Wewers each finished with 13 kills to pace Alverno. Cali Trepp had 31 digs to lead the defense.

The opening set was streaky with five different four-point runs. Eventually, the visitors took a 23-17 lead late. MSOE fought back with five-straight points to pull within one at 23-22. Haworth had a pair of kills to fend off two set points before the Inferno finished off the frame.

Alverno looked to take control of the match in the second set early, scoring the first five points and leading 10-9. But, the Raiders went on a commanding 12-4 run to take a 21-13 lead and then evened the match at 1-1 with three-straight points. MSOE hit a dazzling .484 in the set, finishing with 18 kills compared to just three errors.

The third set was another come-from-behind frame. The Red & White trailed 20-16 late, only to rebound with five-straight points for the first of four-straight lead changes. The Raiders claimed the final lead change at 24-23 as part of three-straight points to get in the driver's seat in the match at 2-1.

In the decisive set, the teams traded points early before the Inferno crept out to a 12-11 advantage. The Raiders then took control of the set with a 7-1 run to open a five-point lead at 18-13. MSOE did not let the Inferno any closer than three the rest of the way and claimed the match win with a Mylin and Bintz block.

MSOE returns to action Saturday, hitting the road to take on Rockford.
