Box Score MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's volleyball team fought back from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set, but fell short in a 25-22, 25-16, 26-28, 15-25, 15-6 loss to Marian Saturday night in front of a boisterous crowd at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (10-15, 4-7 NACC) came back from a 2-0 to down the Sabres (10-17, 6-5 NACC), but fell short of a fourth five-set of the season.
Junior Leah Hendricks led the Red & White attack with 15 kills, while sophomore Rachel Lynde added 10 and sophomore Sarabeth Haworth had nine. Haworth led four players in double-figures in digs with 15. Freshman Abby Born finished with 38 assists off the bench.
Marian put three players in double-figures in kills with Jessica Roberts leading the way with 15. Catelyn Brehm tallied 12 to go with 20 digs and Kathryn Braunling had 11.
MSOE led 18-14 in the first set after a 7-3 run broke an 11-11 tie, but Marian battled back to knot the score at 18-18. The Red & White would regain the lead at 20-19 only to see the visitors answer with a 5-2 run to take the set.
The Sabres then took the 2-0 lead in the match with an early 13-4 run setting the tone in the second set for a 16-6 lead. The Raiders would get no closer than seven down the stretch.
MSOE started a comeback attempt with a determined performance in the third set. An early five-point spurt put the team in the driver's seat early, while another five-point run put the it ahead 15-8. MU fought back to pull within 18-16. Two Lynde kills and a Born ace made it 21-17, but the visitors put together a 5-1 run to tie the score at 22-22.
The teams alternated points during a frenzied late rally until a 26-26 tie. Junior Selena Dickinson then entered the game to serve and responded with an ace. Lynde followed up with a kill to force another set.
The Raiders carried the momentum over into the fourth set to pull even in the match. They used a 5-0 run to stretch a late 15-12 lead into 20-12 and then closed the set out on another five-point run. MSOE hit .433 in the set with 14 kills against just one error.
Marian wanted to leave little doubt in the final set, using a pair of 4-0 runs to jump out to an insurmountable 10-2 lead. The visitors were able to hold off any comeback attempts and close out the match.
The Raiders close out the season with four matches at the Pumpkin Bash, hosted by Augustana next Friday and Saturday in Rock Island, Ill.
