Box Score MILWAUKEE – Sophomore Sara Travia and junior Natalie Gayner scored second-half goals to lead the MSOE women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Edgewood Tuesday evening at Viets Field.
The Raiders' (9-7-1, 5-4 NACC) win was just their second ever against the Eagles (12-4-1, 7-2 NACC), while it is also head coach Rolf Zersen's 100th career victory.
These two teams will meet again Saturday in the opening round of the NACC Tournament. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Breese Stevens Field in Madison.
MSOE put Edgewood under pressure for much of the opening half, allowing the visitors few forays forward. When EC did get forward, the Raider defense and freshman goalkeeper Mary McFee came up with key stops.
Travia and Gayner's goals were mirror images of each other, coming in the 73rd and 90th minutes.
For the game-winner, Travia took the ball just inside the midfield stripe and made a long run into the box while fending off several defenders. She then beat the keeper to the far post on a shot just inside the far post.
Gayner then added an insurance goal with just under a minute remaining, taking the ball from just inside the midfield on the other side of the field. She made another long run into the box and snuck a shot past the out-stretch finger tips of the keeper to seal the victory.
The Raiders finished the match with a 12-7 shot advantage, putting seven shots on frame and taking all nine of the matches' corner kicks. McFee finished with three saves on the night for her fourth shutout of the season, including a pair of key stops midway through the second half to keep the match scoreless.
The win also secured the program's eighth-straight winning season and its seventh-straight 10-win campaign.
