Raiders Split Matches on Season's Final Day

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The MSOE women's volleyball team found itself on both ends of match sweeps Saturday, as it closed out the 2014 with a loss to Augustana and victory over Dickinson on the second day of the Pumpkin Bash.

The Raiders (12-17) were down by the host Vikings (23-9) 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 in the opener, before closing out the season on a high note with a 25-18, 25-19, 25-11 win over the Bluehawks (2-28).

Freshman Abby Born tallied 48 assists in the two matches to finish the season with 991. She finished her rookie campaign with the second-most assists in a season in school history and just missed becoming the fifth player to 1,000 career assists.

Following the tournament, Born was named to the Pumpkin Bash All-Tournament Team.

Against DSU, MSOE broke a 4-4 tie in the first set with an 8-1 run and did not look back. The Bluehawks would get no closer than five the rest of the way. The Raiders held them at bay again in the second, slowly pulling away throughout the frame to take a 20-13 lead. DSU did make it close with a 5-1 run to pull within 21-18, but the Red & White answered with a 4-1 to close out the set.

The Raiders then put the hammer down in the final set, finishing the sweep in style. They jumped out to an 18-5 lead and coasted to the end with an efficient display of volleyball. The team hit .520 in the frame with 13 kills on just 25 attacks and no errors.

MSOE hit .354 in the match with a season-low six errors. Three different players finished with a team-best eight kills in Haworth, junior Leah Hendricks and sophomore Rachel Lynde. Haworth hit .471 and added 12 digs and Hendricks finished with a .533 attack percentage.

The Red & White opened the day against the tournament against host Augustana and struggled to handle the Augie defense. The Raiders totaled just 24 kills in the match, but committed just 11 errors on 105 attacks.

Sophomore Maria Bintz led the team with six kills and Lynde had five. Haworth picked up 17 digs and freshman Aleha Quast totaled 11.

MSOE finishes the season with 12 wins, its most in six seasons.
