Box Score MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's soccer team played its way into the NACC Championship match with a 4-1 victory over Benedictine in the tournament semifinals Wednesday evening at Viets Field.
The second-seeded Raiders (16-4) received goals from four different players in taking down the No. 3 Eagles (11-7-2) and booking its place in the title match for the third time since 2009.
MSOE, which won its school-record 16th match of the season, plays at No.1 Dominican Saturday in River Forest, Ill., at noon.
The Raiders got on the board just 77 seconds into the match on a free kick from the corner of the penalty area. Junior Logan Andryk whipped a ball into the box and senior Marius Prestin blasted a shot into the top of the goal, ricocheting off the underside of the crossbar and across the goal line.
Senior Silas Linares then netted the winner when he doubled the advantage midway through the frame. He carried the ball to the penalty area, cut around some defenders, and unleashed a shot far post for the goal.
The Eagles did pull a goal back when Nick Kapetanos finished a loose ball in the 29th minute. He sent a hard shot on frame, but a deflection off a Raider defender sent the ball past the lunging goalkeeper.
The Raiders went back up by two goals just seven minutes later on junior Michael Skow's second goal of the season. Andryk started the play with a corner kick, resulting in three shots on goal. After a keeper and team save, the ball fell back to Skow, who was able to muscle the ball into the net.
In the first half, MSOE had the better of play, but that is not to say BenU was without its chances. The Raiders held dramatic advantages in shots, 13-2, and corner kicks, 8-2.
Andryk opened the second half netting a goal of his own 11 minutes into the frame. He took a free kick from 20 yards and put it inside the near post to extend the lead to 4-1.
The insurance goal would be all the Red & White needed in holding off the Eagles. The match was more evenly played in the second half, with the visitors gaining a 9-7 shot advantage after the intermission.
MSOE finished with 20 shots in the match and put 11 on frame. Senior Garrett Farin stopped a pair of BenU shots to get the win, extending his school record for goalkeeper wins in a season to 16.
Andryk's first-half assist was his 25th of the season, which extended his own school and NACC record, vaulted him to No. 1 in the nation in the category and put him tied for sixth in NCAA Division III history for assists in a season.
