Box Score PASADENA, Calif. – Sophomore Shaylan Reardon hit two free throws with two seconds remaining to lift the MSOE women's basketball team to a 61-60 victory over Catech Monday evening at Braun Athletic Center.
The Raiders (9-1) opened their California road trip with their seventh-straight victory at the expense of the Beavers (0-10).
Reardon and sophomore Holly Denfeld scored 20 points each to lead MSOE. Denfeld added 13 rebounds for a double-double, while senior Marly Trier finished with seven points and four steals.
Stephanie Wong scored 21 points for Caltech and was joined in double-figures by Kate Lewis and her 16 points.
Reardon's free throws marked the final of five lead changes in the final two minutes and canceled out a pair of Wong free throws with just nine seconds to go that made it 60-59.
Despite the Raiders leading for much of the game, they needed to overcome a five-point deficit with just under three and a half minutes to play. Sophomore Marisa Gerstbrein hit a three-pointer to put the Red & White ahead at 57-56 with 1:39 remaining.
The Beavers hit one-of-two free throws 26 seconds apart to retake the lead, but Reardon put her team ahead with a layup at the 19-second mark leading to the final seconds.
MSOE shot 37.5 percent in the game, making just 3-of-13 three-point attempts. Rebounding was the difference, as the Raiders forged a 43-23 advantage on the glass. They pulled down 22 offensive boards and limited Caltech to just three. The home team finished the game with a 44.2 shooting clip.
The Red & White couldn't shake Caltech in the first half, taking a six-point lead at halftime and building its lead as high as nine in the early goings of the second frame. Denfeld carried much of the load in the opening period, heading into intermission with 18 points on 9-of-10 shooting and pulling down eight rebounds.
The Raiders finish their trip to the Golden State Tuesday evening at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
