Raiders' NACC Tourney Ends Against Edgewood

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - Dylan Rusch hit a layup with 39.2 seconds remaining in regulation to break a 70-70 tie and send Edgewood past the MSOE men's basketball team 76-70 in the quarterfinals of the 2014 NACC Tournament Saturday evening at the Kern Center.

The second-seeded Raiders (21-5) saw their eight-game winning streak snapped by the No. 7 Eagles (12-14), who will advance to Wednesday's semifinals at No. 3 Lakeland.

The game was within three points after the 10:22 mark of the second half until Edgewood pulled away at the free throw line. There was 11 lead changes in that time, leading to a tense final minute.

A pair of missed free throws set up Rusch's basket. Then, on the ensuing possession, the Raiders turned the ball over with 30 seconds to play. They would have a three looks at three-pointers, but the Eagles got the rebound each time and made 4-of-6 free throws to ice the game.

Sophomore Austin Stueck led MSOE with 19 points and eight rebounds. Senior John Cording had 11 points, while senior Jaren Singh and sophomore Connor Patterson had 10 points apiece.

Edgewood was led by Justin Williams and his 21 points off the bench. Rusch, Joe Klocek and Tal Diekvoss each had 14 points.

The Eagles pulled out ahead in the game early, but the Raiders responded and the teams were tied at 16-16 and not separated by more than four points the rest of the half. There were 10 lead changes during that stretch, the last coming on three free throws from Stueck and a tip-in at the buzzer by junior Nathan Verdun to make it 37-33.

MSOE then opened the second half on a 7-2 run to take its largest lead of the game of nine at 44-35. EC would respond with eight-straight points to pull back within one at 44-43. The Raiders pulled away again, this time scoring six-straight, only to see the Eagles claw back within two midway through the half.
