Box Score 2 FT. MYERS, Fla. – Freshman Sara McConnell threw a one-hit shutout in the first game and senior Julie Windish had a walk-off single in the second, as the MSOE softball team swept a pair of games Saturday morning in Florida.
The Raiders (4-2) have won three-straight games after knocking off Eastern Nazarene (0-1) 10-0 and Northland (0-10) 3-2.
McConnell (2-1) struck out 12 and walked none in MSOE's second-straight shutout after a 3-0 victory over Cedar Crest Thursday. She struck out the first four batters she faced on 16 pitches before a one-out double in the second inning. She then retired the final 11 batters of the game, including a stretch of five-straight at one point.
The Raiders posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since April 6-13, 2002.
At the plate, MSOE scored two runs each in the second and fourth innings. Then, in the fourth inning, the team batted around and scored six runs to end the game early. Windish finished 3-for-3 with three runs, while sophomore Beth Young hit a solo home run.
In game two, the score was tied heading into the bottom of the seventh. With one out, McConnell reached first on an error. She moved up to second on a ground out and scored on Windish's slow-rolling single into left field.
The Lumberjills struck first in the third inning with a pair of runs, but the Raiders answered right back. Windish drove in the first run and scored two batters later on a single by freshman Danielle Walsh.
Freshman Shannon Curtis (1-1) got the start in the circle, scattering five hits in seven innings. She struck out seven and walked just one.
MSOE wraps up its Florida trip Sunday, playing back-to-back games against Bridgewater State and Pitt-Bradford.
