Box Score 2 FOND DU LAC, Wis. – Senior Wes Stasik rattled off five hits and reached base nine times, but it was not enough as the MSOE baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by Marian, 9-8 and 11-7, Saturday at Herr-Baker Field.
The Raiders (10-15, 6-8 NACC) held leads midway through each game, but could not contain late rallies by the Sabres (12-9, 6-4 NACC) each time.
Stasik went 2-for-2 and walked four times in game one, as MSOE capitalized on six errors and 11 walks to build an 8-2 lead.
The Raiders opened the scoring with three runs in the first. And, after Marian tied the game in the second, the Raiders scored five runs in the fourth through sixth innings to take a six-run lead. The Sabres scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and took the lead at 9-8 by scoring with five more times in the seventh.
It was a tough day for the bullpen. Senior Luke Yogerst went six innings, striking out six and allowing four runs. Juniors Zack Almberg and Josh Kundinger (1-3) then combining to allow five innings, while getting just two outs in the decisive seventh inning.
The second game started as a back and forth affair, as the teams traded runs in the early going. Marian scored twice in the first and MSOE answered back in the next half inning. The home team went ahead 4-2 with a pair of runs in the third inning, but the Raiders seized a 6-4 lead with four runs in the fifth inning.
As with the first game, the Red and White put pressure on the MU defense and capitalized on a pair of errors and timely hitting to take the lead. Seniors David Miklosi and Adam Vlaj and junior Maz Poeske contributed RBI singles to spark the rally.
Unfortunately, the lead was short-lived. The Sabres scored five times in the bottom half of the frame to take a 9-6 advantage. It would grow to 10-6 before the Raiders pulled back at run in the eighth. Marian then added a run in their half of the eighth and sent MSOE down in order in the ninth to close out the sweep.
The Raiders return to the diamond Monday, hosting Rockford for two games at Henry Aaron Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
