Raiders Claim NACC Regular Season Crown

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE men's tennis team clinched the NACC regular season championship with a pair of conference wins Saturday, defeating Rockford 9-0 and Aurora 6-3 at McKinley Park Tennis Courts.

The Raiders (10-9, 8-1 NACC) topped the NACC standings for the first time since 2010 and will have the top seed for the NACC Tournament Saturday at Edgewood. Three teams tied for second at 6-2.

MSOE played the Spartans (6-6, 603 NACC) in the second match of the day. They had started the day in a tie for first place with the Red and White, but fell to Wisconsin Lutheran earlier in the day. The visitors played to force a five-way tie atop the standings at 7-2, but it was not to be.

The Raiders took just one point out of the doubles competition, but claimed 5-of-6 singles points to win the match.

Senior Eric Klamrowski won at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4, while his teammates swept the No. 3-6 positions. Senior Reekah Delfanian at No. 4 (7-5, 6-4)  and freshman Tom Smith at No. 6 (6-3, 6-1) won each of their matches in straight sets.

Freshman David Gorodetsky took his No. 3 singles match in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, as did freshman John Price at No. 5 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3).

Smith and Price nabbed the Raiders' doubles point at No. 3, 8-2.

Against the Regents (0-8, 0-8 NACC) in the morning, MSOE won all six contested points, scoring the final three points by default. Head coach Mike Davidson sent out a new lineup for the match, allowing senior Steve Smith and freshmen Austin Campbell and Lucas Ferrando to slide into the singles competition.

Junior Zachary Dam slid up to the No. 1 singles place for the second time in a week and won 7-6 (7-4), 6-0. Smith won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. In his first collegiate match, Campbell played in the No. 3 position and won 6-0, 6-1. Ferrando won at No. 4 6-4, 6-0.

RU defaulted at No. 4 and 5.

In doubles, Dam and usual partner junior Matt Slaughter played No. 1 doubles and won 8-3. Campbell and Ferrando teamed for an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, while the Regents defaulted at No. 3.
