SAINT PETER, Minn. – In their last match before ITAs, the MSOE men's tennis team fell to Millikin University as
Andres Saavedra won both his singles and doubles matches.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Andres Saavedra and Augusto Yamazaki in doubles play secured a first round win after a withdraw, then defeating Charles Morgan and Gavin Kelleher of Wisconsin-Whitewater 8-7 to advance to the round of 16 where they fell to #5 ranked Yash Bahalkar and Christopher Dencker of Gustavus Adolphus 8-6. In the B doubles, Lukas Axelsson and Mats Peeters cruised to a first round win over Caleb Swigart and Carsen Kramer of University of Northwestern 8-1, advancing to the following round from a withdraw before dropping their round of sixteen matchup to Cale Vogel and Wesley Saunders of Hamline.
- In singles play, Saavedra entered the tournament ranked 17th, securing a first-round bye, defeating Billy Hughes of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the next round with ease 6-1 6-1. In the final eight, Saavedra would fall to #2 ranked Theo Billson of Whitewater 4-6 6-1 10-7. Randy Funez also won a convincing opening match over Jake Schultz of St. Olaf 6-0 6-1, falling in the following round to #4 ranked Maxi Gutbezahl of Grinnell 6-2 6-4. In the B singles, Santiago Angulo defeated Alexander Coleman of Macalester 6-1 6-2, followed by a comeback win over Mathais Llantoy of St. Scholastica 2-6 6-3 17-15. He would then fall in the following round to Everett Rosenbloom 6-2 6-0. Mendes secured an opening round win as well, defeating Trace Turner of Cornell 6-7 7-5 10-7.
