LISLE, Ill. – Freshman Brandon McCumber threw six strong innings and the bullpen finished strong as the MSOE baseball team won game two 4-2 to earn a doubleheader split against Benedictine Saturday at the Benedictine Sports Complex.
The Raiders (6-8, 2-2 NACC) were the home team for the twin bill after the series was shifted from Milwaukee. They fell to the Eagles (6-10, 3-1 NACC) in the first game.
McCumber (1-2) picked up his first collegiate win, throwing six innings, scattering five hits, walking three and striking out one. Junior Zach Almberg added two scoreless innings of relief and senior David Miklosi tossed the ninth inning for his second save.
MSOE struck first in game two, plating a single run in the second inning. BenU tied the score with an unearned run in the next half inning, but the Raiders pulled ahead for good with three runs in their next two at-bats.
Miklosi led off the third inning with a single and senior Tyler Magyar reached on an error, while trying to move him over with a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Brad Schonder followed with another sacrifice bunt attempt and reached on another Eagle error. Miklosi came around to score in the process. Junior Jake Roberts plated another run with an RBI ground out.
In the fourth inning, MSOE made it 4-1 with four-straight two-out walks pushing its final run across.
Benedictine added another unearned score to pull within two, but the Raider bullpen allowed just three base runners in three inning of work to close out the win.
In game one, the Eagles scored five runs in the first three innings and their pitching staff held the MSOE bats in check in taking the first game.
