Raiders Double Up St. Norbert 4-2 in Opener

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – Junior Caitlin Liddiard and sophomore Sara Travia scored two goals apiece to propel the MSOE women's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over St. Norbert Friday evening at Viets Field.

The Raiders (1-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on the Green Knights (0-1) and answered each goal with a strike of their own.

Liddiard scored the first and final goals for the Red and White, getting the scoring started in the 10th minute. She received an outlet pass from the midfield and carried the ball for 30 yards, cutting a defender inside and lofting a shot over the keeper from the top of the penalty area.

Minutes later, Travia showed her hunger for the goal. She blasted a 30-yard free kick off the cross bar in the 16th minute before striking for her first goal at 29:49. She created a 1v1 with the goalkeeper by beating her defender and finished far post from 15 yards out.

After an SNC goal in the 43rd minute, Travia re-established a two-goal advantage in the final minute before halftime. She blocked a defender's clearance attempt, creating another 1v1 opportunity. She calmly finished to make it 3-1 at the break.

The Green Knights, who made the NCAA Tournament as Midwest Conference champions last season, fought for a foothold in the second half. That came in the 55th minute when Shannon Jung scored an improbable goal from near the midfield logo to make it a one-goal game.

The Raiders withstood an SNC attack for a while, but emerged on the other end hungry for another score. The game's final goal came on from the duo of Travia and Liddiard. Sophomore Rachael Griffin was taken down at the top of the box. On the ensuing free kick, Travia ran over the ball and Liddiard followed with a blast past the frozen keeper.

MSOE finished with a 20-8 shot advantage in the match, looking organized and dangerous throughout the evening. Sophomore Sydney Stephens made three saves to get the win in goal, including a point-blank save off her line in the closing minutes of the first half.

Sarah Platzer stopped five Red and White shots for the visitors.

The Raiders have the rest of the weekend off, returning to action next weekend in Ohio. They will play at Capital Friday and remain in town to take on Baldwin Wallace Saturday.
