Wild Ending Does MSOE In Against Marian

Box Score

MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's soccer team saw five goals scored in the last six-plus minutes off regulation as it came out on the losing end in a wild 4-3 match with Marian Saturday afternoon at Viets Field.

The Raiders (4-2-1, 0-1 NACC) and Sabres (3-4, 1-0 NACC) were tied at 1-1 in the 84th minute before a flurry of late goals .

Laura Maly had the decisive goal with just 1:27 remaining in the match on a bounding 25 yard shot that was misplayed in the box. It came just 50 seconds after MU got an equalizer from Kayla Bernardi.

Sophomore Sara Travia scored two goals for MSOE and assisted on the team's other score, putting her side ahead in the first half. She made a diagonal run through the Sabre defense and blasted a shot inside the far post from 20 yards out.

The visitors tied the game in the 59th minute and the score would remain at 1-1 until they took the 2-1 lead at 83:29.

The Raiders wasted little time retying the score, this time at 2-2, on a goal from sophomore Erika Spanbauer 1:47 later. Travia drove to the endline and laced a cross into the box. The pass deflected off a Marian player and Spanbauer put it into the net.

Travia then put MSOE in the lead again, taking a pass from freshman Carly Mitus at the top of the box. She danced around the ball, creating enough room for her to blast a shot into the goal at 87:10.

Unfortunately for the Red & White, the Sabres netted their own equalizer just 33 seconds later.

The Raiders controlled the game's possession and momentum for much of the afternoon, yielding few chances outside of Marian's goals. Junior Caitlin Liddiard hit a post in the first half and Spanbauer had a shot that was rolling for an empty net cleared off the line in the 83rd minute.

Overall, MSOE had a 24-10 shot advantage and 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Sydney Stephens made four saves in the match, while a pair of keepers combined on five for the Sabres. Caitlyn Rosenberger stopped four shots, but gave way to Alysha Kallas in the 83rd minute with an injury.

The Red & White returns to action Tuesday, hosting Elmhurst at Viets Field.
