Box Score DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan scored two first-half goals and it proved to be too much for the 19th-ranked MSOE men's soccer team as it fell to the host school 3-1 Friday afternoon in the NCAA Tournament First Round.
The Raiders (14-5-1) pulled a goal back early in the second half and looked poised to get the equalizer, but the Battling Bishops (16-4-2) held strong before putting the game away with a late goal. OWU now advances to the second round Saturday, where it will host the winner of Calvin/St. Aloysius.
Kyle Baum scored twice for the home side in the first half, striking for the game's first goal in just the fifth minute. He pounced on a spilled cross and tucked it into the net. Then, in the 31st minute, he made a run into the box and slotted a shot in off the inside of the far post.
MSOE regrouped at halftime and got on the scoreboard in the 59th minute. Sophomore Gregory Borsari won a ball back in the midfield, played it through junior Trevor Cwiok to senior Logan Andryk, who one-touched it into the path of sophomore Braden Andryk. The younger Andryk then ran into the box and beat the keeper to his left to make it 2-1.
As the Raiders pushed forward for the equalizer late, the Battling Bishops took advantage of their stretched shape to tack on an insurance goal. It was Ricardo Balmaceda finishing in the 87th minute. From there, OWU killed the game off in the corner for long stretches and stifle any Red & White attack forward.
MSOE held a slight 11-10 shot advantage, but tested the Ohio Wesleyan keeper with just two shots on goal. Junior keepers Sean Stelter and Jeff Clements split the match, with Stelter making one save in the first half.
