Raiders Fall Short In NCAA Tournament, 3-2

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Senior Tori St. Martin and junior Maria Schumacher each scored goals as the MSOE women's soccer team fell short of Calvin, 3-2, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday at Zuidema Field.

The Raiders (15-7) trailed 3-1 before a late Schumacher score pulled them within 3-2 of the host Knights (19-2-2), but they could not get the equalizer. Calvin now advances to Saturday's second round against the winner of UW-Oshkosh/DePauw.

Both teams struck for their first goals in a span of 51 seconds early in the first half. It was the home side scoring first in the 11th minute, taking a quick free kick and putting it into the box. Taylor TenHarmsel was on the other end of the set piece and scored from eight yards out.

MSOE responded quickly, taking the ball right down the field on the kick-off and forcing a corner kick. Schumacher's corner kick bounced around in the box off multiple Raiders' heads, before St. Martin poked it into the goal. It was her second goal in four games after having not scored a goal since her freshman season.

The game went into halftime knotted at 1-1, but Calvin managed to score twice in the first 13 minutes of the second half to take control of the match.

The Raiders did not quit, fighting for a goal to get them back into the game. Senior Natalie Gayner set up that chance when she was taken down just outside the penalty area with just under five minutes remaining. Schumacher stepped up to the set piece and bent a shot into the goal, ricocheting it off the near post and into the net.

The Knights held a 25-10 shot advantage in the match, with sophomore keeper Mary McFee making eight saves. The Raider back line also came up with two stops on the goal line, including junior Becca Keller in the 35th minute to keep the score at 1-1.

MSOE wrapped up its most impressive season to date: winning a school record 15 games, claiming a first-ever conference championship and making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
