Box Score 2 MAUSTON, Wis. – Freshman Ryan Newman reached base five times, scored the winning run and earned the win on the mound as the MSOE baseball team defeated Northland 13-12 in the first of two games played at the Woodside Sport Complex Saturday afternoon.
The Raiders (1-12) edged the Lumberjacks (5-7) in a game one slugfest, but fell to Elmhurst (3-3) in game two, 9-1.
Newman was the start of the first game, going 3-for-5 with a pair of walks and three runs scored. He then tossed a pair of no-hit innings to secure the win.
Senior Jake Roberts also went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs as one of four more Red & White hitters finished with multiple hits in the game. Junior Casey Magyar reached base five times with a pair of hits and three walks.
MSOE laced out a season-high 16 hits and worked 10 walks in the game.
With the score tied at 12-12 in the 11th inning, Newman walked with one out and took second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, he moved up to third on another wild pitch. Freshman Josh Peltier then singled to centerfield to score Newman and send the Raiders to their first win of the season.
The Lumberjacks got on the board first, scoring four times in the top half of the opening inning. MSOE quickly responded with six runs in their half of the inning and pushed its lead to 11-4 with a pair of runs in the second and three more in the third inning.
NC scored three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to pull within 12-10 heading into the final inning. The Raiders retired the first two batters of the ninth, before the Lumberjacks rallied with a single, double and two-run single to force extra innings.
Freshman Michael Boehmer put together a strong start on the mound in game two, yielding three runs and striking out seven in six innings. He kept MSOE in the game, as it was able to get a run back in the seventh inning to make it 3-1.
Unfortunately, Elmhurst tacked on four runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning to make it 7-1 and added another pair of runs in the eighth inning to put the game out of way.
Five different Red & White players notching hits with Newman driving in Roberts for the team's lone run. Freshman Jimmy Carrington, who had two hits against Northland, added another base knock against Elmhurst to run his hitting streak to 12 games.
The Raiders return to action Sunday, hosting Beloit in a doubleheader for their home opener at The Rock Complex in Franklin.
