Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore Callie Wightman threw nine shutout innings to get wins in both games as the MSOE softball team defeated both Eastern Nazarene and Elms Saturday on its last day of its season-opening trip to Florida.
The Raiders (4-4) shut out the Lions (1-1) 7-0 in the first game and got past the Blazers (0-2) 3-1 in eight innings in game two.
Against ENC, Wightman (2-1) got the start in the circle and tossed 6.2 shutout innings. She scattered five hits and a walk, while striking out five. Freshman Caitlyn Moran came on to get the last out and close out the team's second shutout of the season.
At the plate, Wightman and junior Beth Young continued hot starts, collecting a pair of hits apiece. Moran, Young and junior Katie Ready each drove in runs, as the Raiders were able to take advantage of six Lion errors to add pad its advantage.
The first batter of the game came around to score for MSOE, which added two runs in the third and another in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead into the late innings. It would then add three more runs in the final frame to put the game even further out of reach.
In game two, Wightman retired all seven batters she faced, including the first batter she faced with the bases loaded, to close out the win. Sophomore Shannon Curtis made the start and limited the Blazers to just two hits, while striking out five.
Freshman Laryn Brinkman gave the Raiders another first-inning lead, scoring their lead-off runner again with a double. Unfortunately, Elms would pull even without a hit in the fourth inning on a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly.
The game was tied at 1-1 after seven innings and both team started the eighth with runners on second per tiebreaker rules. The Red & White capitalized quickly, as freshman Gabbi Garcia singled in freshman Hannah Wassman with one out in the eighth to make it 2-1.
Garcia then came around to score three batters later on a single to center field from Young.
In the bottom half of the frame, the Blazers quickly moved their free base runner to third with a sacrifice bunt, but Wightman stranded her there by inducing a long ground ball out and fly out to end the game.
Garcia had a strong day at the plate, as well, collecting a pair of hits in game two and scoring two runs in each game. Brinkman ended up reaching three times in game two on a hit and two walks.
The Raiders return to the field next weekend with a doubleheader at Rose-Hulman Saturday.
