Box Score 2 PLYMOUTH, Wis. – Freshman Michael Boehmer hurled his fifth-straight quality start in game one, but the MSOE baseball team fell on a walk-off single in the ninth during a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Lakeland Saturday afternoon at Muskie BB Field.
The Raiders (5-21, 2-8 NACC) held a lead heading into the bottom of the eighth and tied the score in their final at bat of game one, but the Muskies (6-20, 2-8 NACC) snatched a 6-5 victory. Then, in game two, LC scored eight times over the fifth and sixth innings on its way to a 9-3 win.
Boehmer was once again denied his first collegiate win, throwing six innings and allowing just three hits. He walked a pair and struck out seven. Over his last five starts, he's posted a 3.41 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 34.1 innings and struck out 22.
MSOE trailed 3-1 heading into the eighth inning of the opener, but rallied for three runs to take a 4-3 lead. Junior Tyler Parisi led off with a single and the Raiders took advantage of an error two batters later. Then, with two outs, freshman Jimmy Carrington plated two runs with a double to the gap in right center. Junior Ryan Miller followed with a single to score Carrington and give his team the lead.
The Muskies would re-retake the lead on a two-run home run by Jared Rear in the eighth inning, only for freshman Jason Burant to tie the game at 5-5 with an RBI single in the ninth inning.
Lakeland responded with four-straight singles to open the ninth inning, with the final hit scoring the decisive run.
Carrington and Burant finished the game with two hits apiece.
Freshman Matt Melbye threw 1.1 innings of relief and freshman Ryan Newman (1-5) suffered the loss, working the final 0.2 innings.
In game two, MSOE jumped ahead 2-0 on back-to-back run-scoring singles by Miller and sophomore Brandon McCumber.
LC pulled a single run back in the second inning and surged ahead with five runs in the fifth inning for a 6-2 lead. The home team would strike for three more runs in the sixth inning to take a 9-2 lead.
Burant added an RBI single for the Raiders in the eighth inning, but that was the only late-game rally the Red & White could muster in the game.
Burant added three more hits to his day's tally. Newman, McCumber and freshman Josh Peltier had two hits apiece.
On the mound, McCumber (1-1) made his first start of the season and threw 4.2 innings. He allowed six runs on eight hits and a walk, but added four strikeouts. He had allowed just a run on three hits through the first three innings before Lakeland broke the game open.
The Raiders return to the friendly confines of The Rock Complex Sunday, hosting Concordia Wisconsin in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
