Box Score FRANKLIN, Wis. – Sophomore Brandon McCumber drove in the winning run for the second time in four games to lead the MSOE baseball team to a 6-3 victory over Carroll in 10 innings Thursday afternoon at The Rock Complex.
The Raiders (4-16) struck for three runs in the sixth inning to get past the Pioneers (6-11) at their home field. The game was shifted to MSOE's field due to field conditions in Waukesha, while CU remained the visitors.
With one out in the 10th inning, freshman Jason Burant singled to start the winning rally. After an error, MCumber followed with a base hit to break the 3-3 tie. Three batters later, senior Jake Roberts followed with a two-run single to provide insurance runs.
Freshman Matt Melbye (1-0) pitched the final three innings for the win, working around a pair of walks for a scoreless 10th inning. He struck out three, with three walks and just one hit allowed in the outing.
MSOE had a good day on the mound, as freshman Trevor Symbal got the start and allowed just one earned run over three innings. Sophomore John Dzurka scattered three hits and a single run over the middle three innings.
At the plate, McCumber was one of three Raiders with two hits in the game, joined by Burant and freshman Jimmy Carrington. Burant and Carrington scored two runs each and sophomore Brad Schonder joined Roberts with two runs driven in.
Freshman Ryan Newman was hit by a pitch to start the game and moved up to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Carrington then followed with an RBI single to stake the team to a 1-0 lead.
Carroll responded with a single run in the first inning and took a 2-1 lead with another run in the second inning.
Schonder ripped a two-run double in the third inning to push the Red & White back into the lead at 3-2.
The Pioneers tied the game in the seventh inning on a Clayton Schmitt home run, eventually sending the game to extra innings.
The Raiders returns to the field Saturday, hosting Dominican in a doubleheader at The Rock.
