Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE – The MSOE women's volleyball team swept past Lawrence and battled back against Carroll for a five-set victory in opening the 2015 season with a pair of wins Tuesday evening at the Kern Center.
The Raiders (2-0) downed LU (0-2) 25-21, 25-20, 27-25 in the opener, then battled back from 2-1 down and a 10-3 deficit in the final set for a 21-25,25-22,26-24,23-25,14-16 win over the Pioneers (0-2).
After winning the first set against Carroll, MSOE dropped the next two sets and faced a 2-1 hole. It would bounce back with a fourth-set victory to force the decisive final frame.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 10-3 lead in that fifth set, when the Raider bench called timeout. The Red & White claimed the first three points out of the break and 8-of-11 to tie the score at 11-11. After conceding a single point, the home team pulled ahead with another three-point spurt for a 14-12 advantage.
Carroll would pull even at 14-14, but a kill by senior Leah Hendricks and a Hendricks ace closed the door on the visitors.
Hendricks and junior Rachel Lynde finished with a team-best 15 kills apiece, while freshman Hannah Pekarek tallied 30 digs and sophomore Aleah Quast 26. Sophomore Abby Born directed the offensive charge with 42 assists.
Three players had 10+ kills for the Red & White in the first match, led by Pekarek's 12 in her collegiate debut. She added 13 digs for a double-double, as Hendricks posted one of her own with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Lynde rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 kills, while Born tallied 28 assists.
MSOE limited Lawrence to just .041 attacking in the match, as the Vikings did not attack better than .095 in any set and were limited to -.024 in the second set.
The wins marked the debut of first-year head coach Tom Wood leading the program.
The Raiders return to the court Friday at the two-day Forester Invitational, hosted by Lake Forest.
