Seubert Caps Raider Comeback Against Lakeland

MILWAUKEE – Junior Collin Seubert hit the game-winning layup with 9.6 remaining to cap a comeback from as many as 16 for the MSOE men's basketball team in a 74-72 victory over Lakeland Thursday evening at the Kern Center.

The Raiders (8-6, 5-4 NACC) trailed the Muskies (9-6, 5-5 NACC) by as many as 11 in the second half as they fought back for their sixth-straight win at home.

Seubert finished with 13 points as MSOE put four players in double-figures. Senior Austin Stueck had a stat line of 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, while junior Alex Darville tallied 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Senior Connor Patterson fought off foul trouble for a team-high 14 points.

Tanner Hackl paced Lakeland with 20 points and 12 rebounds in the game. Brandon James had 17 points and Joshuan McNeal finished with 13 points and nine rebounds before fouling out.

Travis Kell hit a layup to make it 72-66 in favor of Lakeland with just 1:08 remaining before a quick Raider comeback. The Red & White missed a shot on their next possession, but after the defensive rebound, freshman Max Wojcik came away with a steal and hit an off-balance jumper to pull within four.

Lakeland missed a free throw in the bonus and Stueck came up with the rebound. Seubert drained a three from the corner to make it 72-71 with 32.6 seconds on the clock. The Raiders once again fouled, but LC once again missed the front end of a 1-and-1 trip to the line and Patterson pulled down the rebound to set up Seubert's go-ahead basket with 9.6 seconds on the clock.

On the ensuing possession, senior Brent Radlinger came up with a steal and Stueck iced the game with a free throw with 0.5 seconds on the clock.

MSOE had trailed by 10 at halftime and 11 points at the 12:04 mark of the second half before starting a comeback. It scored eight-straight points to pull within three at 54-51 on two Patterson free throws. Then, after back-to-back Lakeland baskets, the Raiders responded with a Darville three-point play and a Patterson layup to make it a two-point game. After a Muskie free throw, junior Collin Seubert hit a layup to make it 59-58 at 7:06.

The teams then battled into the final minute with the score fluctuating between two and three possessions until the exciting final minute-plus.

The Raiders struggled offensively in the first half in falling down by as many as 16 points early. They shot just 28.6 percent in the frame. Then, in the second half, they found their touch for a 55.9 percent clip to finish at 42 percent for the night. The Muskies shot 43.1 percent on the night.

There was just 23 combined turnovers in the game, 12 for Lakeland and 11 for MSOE, but the home team managed to capitalize to the tune of a 19-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Raiders return to the court Saturday at Concordia Chicago.
