Box Score PLATTEVILLE, Wisconsin – Junior Sam D'Amato's first collegiate goal was the difference as the MSOE men's soccer team overcame a halftime deficit with three unanswered goals to upend UW-Platteville 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Stadium.
The Raiders (7-5) won for the third time this week, and the second time in as many days, by scoring three times in a 21-plus minute span in the second half against the Pioneers (8-4).
Junior Braden Andryk scored a goal in his sixth-straight game and assisted on D'Amato's winner, while junior Gregory Borsari also got on the scoresheet to tie the game at 1-1.
It was UW-Platteville that had the upper hand in the first half, forging an 8-1 shot advantage and breaking through for the game's first goal in the 17th minute. Braxton Rottinghaus was in the right place at the right time to tap Logan Rinderknecht's cross through the box into an open net and give the home side the lead.
MSOE rebounded in the second half and tied the game just over nine minutes after the intermission off the head of Borsari. Junior Sean Tabbert set the play in motion with his corner kick to the fr post, where Borsari drove a header into the ground and the back of the net.
The tie would last just about nine minutes as Andryk scored his league-leading 14th goal of the season with a penalty kick to make it 2-1. Then, in the 76th minute, D'Amato added a valuable insurance goal, taking a pass from Andryk and slotting a low shot home to make it 3-1.
The goal came in handy, as the Pioneers were not done. They pulled a goal back on a long-range shot from Brad Strobel just 3:08 later. Fortunately for the Red & White, that would be as close as UWP would get.
Senior Jeff Clements picked up the win in goal with three saves on the day. A pair of keepers saw time for Platteville, combining to make three saves.
After MSOE got the upperhand in the second half with a 6-5 shot advantage, the shot totals finished at 13-7 in favor of the home side, with a slight 6-5 edge in shots on goal to the Raiders. UWP also pressured the Red & White into nine corners against its four.
The Raiders will look to continue its run Wednesday, returning to NACC play at Aurora. Kick-off is at 2 p.m.
