Box Score MILWAUKEE – Isaiah Gronholz scored the game-winning goal midway through the first overtime to hand the MSOE men's soccer team a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Wisconsin Lutheran in the NACC Tournament First Round Sunday afternoon at Viets Field.
The No. 3-seed Raiders (11-8-1) saw their season come to an end with the loss, while the sixth-seeded Warriors (9-7-4) advance to the semifinals Wednesday, where they will play at top-seeded Dominican.
After a scoreless first half, MSOE jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after 66 minutes, but the visitors answered back with goals in the 74th and 83rd minutes to force overtime. Gronholz then ended the game in the 95th minute, running through the midfield and blasting a shot from 30 yards out.
Junior Sam D'Amato opened the scoring in the 63rd minute, finishing off a cross from junior Sean Tabbert, who finished with two assists on the day. Freshman Danny Bader actually started the play from the midfield, finding Tabbert in the corner, who sent a cross to the center of the goal along the six-yard box.
Then, just over three minutes later, Tabbert stole the ball in the midfield and found junior Braden Andryk with a pass entering the box. He put the Raiders ahead 2-0 with a shot just inside the far post.
MSOE was unfortunate to not lead by more, as Tabbert hit the post twice with strong, target shots, and freshman Tony Roselli had a header strike woodwork late in regulation, as well.
WLC pulled a goal back on the first of two Jimmy Pierson goals in the 74th minute. Then, after the Red & White were reduced to 10 men on a second yellow card in the 77th minute, Pierson struck again off a rebound from the crossbar to level the score.
The Warriors finished with one more shot in the match, 22-21, including 10-8 in shots on goal.
Senior Jeff Clements played in goal and made seven stops in the match. Erek Lehnen finished with six saves.
Andryk finished the season with points in each of his final 13 games and fell just one goal shy of the school record for goals in a season with 22.
