Box Score SHEBOYGAN, Wisconsin – Sophomore Max Wojcik scored a game-high 22 points and had a pair of teammates post double-doubles as the MSOE men's basketball team posted its first win of the season, 77-63, over Lakeland Tuesday evening at Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Raiders (1-1, 1-0 NACC) trailed 58-55 with 7:16 remaining, but closed the game on a 22-5 run to put away the Muskies (0-3, 0-1 NACC).
Wojcik shot 7-of-11 from the field, hitting both of his three-pointers and all six free throws on the night. Senior Collin Seubert finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while senior Alex Darville tallied 15 points and 10 boards off the bench.
Senior Dylan Sommerfeld also reached double-digits in scoring with 12 points.
Joshuan McNeal scored 21 points for Lakeland. Brandon James and Pat McDonals added 16 points each.
The game was back-and-forth throughout and featured 17 lead changes. The Muskies led 58-55 after an Eric Nygaard jumper with 7:16 to play. From that point on, the Raiders did not allow a field goal for nearly five minutes, forcing LU to go just 1-for-9 over the rest of the game.
Offensively, MSOE scored on six of its next eight possessions. A Seubert tip-in with 2:41 remaining made it 69-60. Lakeland followed with a three, but Darville answered with a layup and the Red & White called timeout heading into the next final minute.
Coming out of the timeout, the next four Muskie possessions resulted in a sophomore Jason Palesse steal, a Seubert defensive rebound, a Wojcik steal and a steal by senior Karel Gavenciak to close out the game. Meanwhile, the Raiders hit all six of its free throws at the other end to put the game out of reach.
MSOE shot 44.4 percent from the field, finished with 36 points in the paint and forged a 46-34 rebounding edge. It also got to the free throw line 24 times, making 18, compared to just 4-for-9 by LU. Lakeland shot 42.2 percent on the night.
The Raiders return to the court Nov. 30, hosting Edgewood.
