Denfeld, Kroll Lead Raiders Past Dominican

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Junior Holly Denfeld scored 27 points and senior Megan Kroll flirted with a triple-double as the MSOE women's basketball team scored  65-50 victory over Dominican Saturday afternoon at the Igini Sports Forum.

The Raiders (16-7, 14-4 NACC) held the Stars (3-20, 2-16 NACC) to just 31.5 percent shooting in the game and pulled away by outscoring the home team 18-8 in the third quarter.

Denfeld continued her torrid scoring pace, shooting an identical 13-for-21 for the third-straight game. Over her last four games, she is averaged 30.5 points per game. Meanwhile, Kroll filled up her stat line with eight points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

Freshman Brooke Scott added 10 points and junior Margaret Pugh had nine for the Red & White.

Dominican was led by Claudia DeNigris and her 17 points. Shamia Clark had 11.

The Raiders scored the first 11 points of the game and fended off a 7-0 DU run to maintain the lead after the first quarter. The advantage grew to as many as 11 in the second quarter and stood at 38-28 at halftime.

The score was 40-33 with 6:55 remaining in the third quarter when MSOE closed out the period on a 16-3 run to open a game-high 20 point lead at 56-36 entering the fourth quarter and effectively putting the game out of reach. The home team would get no closer than 13 the rest of the way.

The Raiders shot 44.8 percent for the game, making 4-of-11 three-pointers, and went 9-for-11 from the free throw line. They also forged a 44-29 rebounding advantage, led by Kroll's 11 boards and senior Marly Trier's 13. Denfeld added eight in the game.

In addition to shooting just 32.1 percent, the Stars made just 6-of-20 three-pointers and went 10-of-19 at the free throw line.

MSOE closes out the regular season at home, hosting Marian Tuesday and Rockford Saturday. The Raiders need one win to clinch a top-three finish, while they trail the two teams tied for first place by just one game.
