Roley, Boehmer Dominate in Season-Opening Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Junior Jacob Roley and sophomore Michael Boehmer each pitched five-hit complete games to send the MSOE baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Hanover on the first day of the 2016 season Sunday afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational.

Roley allowed an unearned run in game one as the Raiders (2-0) downed the Panthers (0-2) 5-1 in the opener. Boehmer then came on in game two, keeping HC off the board until a late tally in a 9-1 Red & White victory.

After pitching two seasons at McHenry College, Roley made his Raider debut in style. He went seven innings, striking out seven and conceding just the five hits, one walk and that unearned run.

It was Hanover striking first on the day, plating an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning. MSOE immediately tied the score, loading the bases with two outs when sophomore Jimmy Carrington drew a walk. An inning later, the Red & White took the lead on an unearned run of its own and never looked back.

Sophomore Garrett Willems laced a two-run single to left field to make it 4-1 in the fifth inning and senior Casey Magyar drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to provide the final score.

Senior Tyler Doyle finished with three hits, while Willems and sophomore Ryan Newman had two each in support of Boehmer in game two. On the mound, he scattered five hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out four.

It was the Raiders striking first this time, loading the bases with no outs in the first inning. Newman came in to score on a double play and Willems drive in Doyle with a single to right-center. Willems had another RBI in a three-run third inning. Carrington also drove in a run in the frame and came around to score on an error three batters later.

MSOE broke open the game with four more runs in the fifth inning, with senior Ryan Miller drawing a bases-loaded walk and another run coming in on a wild pitch with sophomore Max Kemp batting. He then drove in another run with a single and, three batters later, Doyle capped the scoring with a base hit.

The Red & White offense was effective with timely hitting, recording 14 hits over the two games, but none for extra bases. That was all the pitching needed in recording a pair of wins.

The Raiders will play eight games in Florida during their season-opening trip, returning to the diamond Monday with two games against Lyndon State. First pitch in game one is set for 11 a.m. central time.
