Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Sophomore Matt Melbye had three hits and scored four runs, while the pitching staff allowed just one hit over seven innings as the MSOE baseball team routed Northland, 12-2, in the first of two games Saturday morning at Lenz Field.
The Raiders (6-6) scored nine times over the second and third innings against the Lumberjacks in the opener, but could not fend off Loras (1-1) in a 14-1 loss in game two.
Melbye and senior Tyler Doyle led MSOE's offensive barrage in game one with three hits apiece and were among four different players drove in two runs each. Sophomore Garrett Willems had a two-run single and senior Casey Magyar finished with a pair of sacrifice flies.
Trailing 1-0 after one inning, the Raider hitters went to work. Senior Ryan Miller and Melbye drove in runs with the second and third of back-to-back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Magyar plated Melbye with a sac fly.
Melbye's second-straight double, sophomore Max Kemp's single and another Magyar sacrifice plated three more runs in consecutive at-bats with no outs in the third inning. Willems later singled in a pair of runs and Doyle scampered home on a wild pitch to make it 9-1.
McCumber made it 10-1 with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning and Doyle hit a two-run single in the sixth inning to open an 11-run lead.
MSOE's pitchers were effectively wild, as sophomore Michael Boehmer (2-1) allowed just one hit over six innings, but walked five batters. Sophomore Trevor Symbal then pitched a hitless seventh, walking two.
The Lumberjacks opened the scoring by pushing across a run in the top of the first inning without registering a hit on two walks and a wild pitch. Then, with the Red & White holding a 12-1 lead, they scored in their final at-bat, also without a hit, courtesy of two walks, a wild pitch and a ground out.
NC's lone hit was a single up the middle in the third inning.
In game two, Loras posted a pair of six-run innings in rolling past the Raiders. The Duhawks effectively put the game out of reach with a six-run first inning, then tacked on six more in the seventh to provide for the lop-sided final.
Miller collected a pair of hits for MSOE and senior Nick Jablonski had an RBI single to account for the team's lone run.
The Raiders return to the field with a pair of double-headers next weekend. They first play at Beloit Saturday, then host Finlandia Sunday.
