Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Junior Brandon McComber and sophomore Ryan Newman had three hits apiece, but St. Vincent broke a 3-3 tie with five runs over the fifth and sixth innings to pull away for an 8-4 victory Wednesday at the RussMatt Invitational.
McCumber drove in two runs and Newman scored twice for the Raiders (3-3) against the Bearcats (2-2), while senior Tyler Doyle had two hits for his third-straight multi-hit game and fourth in six games this season.
SVC struck first with two runs in the opening inning and made it 3-0 with one more in the second before MSOE struck back.
In the fifth inning, the Raiders struck for three runs. After a lead-off error, Newman singled two batters later and Doyle singled to left field for the first run. Sophomore Jimmy Carrington then singled to load the bases before McCumber game through with a single to center to plate two more runs.
The tie was short-lived as the Bearcats loaded the bases with two outs. Back-to-back walks put St. Vincent ahead 5-3. It would then added three more runs, punctuated by a two-run home run by Eddie Kilkeary, in the sixth inning to push that advantage to 8-3.
The Raiders would get one run back in the seventh inning on an RBI ground out from Carrington, but that would be as close as they get.
On the mound for MSOE, sophomore Matt Melbye got the start and went 1.2 innings. Sophomore Trevor Symbal threw 3.0 innings and was saddled with the loss, while freshman Austin Heyman closed out the game with 3.1 innings of work.
The Raiders close out their Florida trip Friday with two games against Neumann.
