Box Score 2 FRANKLIN, Wis. – Senior Tyler Doyle hit a walk-off triple in game one and the MSOE baseball team hit four home runs in game two in sweeping Lakeland in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at The Rock Complex.
The Raiders (11-11, 4-2 NACC) took game one 3-2, then roughed up the Muskies (6-11, 3-3 NACC) for a 14-4 win in seven innings in game two.
Sophomore Owen Burnikel hit two home runs in the nightcap rout, while sophomore Jimmy Carrington also went deep and drove in six runs.
After both teams' pitchers were the story in a tight game one, MSOE jumped on Lakeland quickly in game two. Carrington hit a two-run single in the first inning, while Burnikel and Doyle each had RBI singles in the second to build a 4-0 lead.
Carrington doubled in a run in a four-run fourth inning, scoring on sophomore Garrett Willems' two-run home run to make it 8-1.
Burnikel went deep for the first time in the fifth inning and Carrington followed with a three-run shot for his first home run of the season and make it 12-1.
Lakeland would pull back three runs in the sixth inning, but the Raiders put the finishing touches on their run-rule victory in the bottom half of the inning on Burnikel's second home run of the game.
On the mound, junior Jacob Roley (3-2) was not at his most effective, but tossed 5.2 strong innings. Coming off a three-hit shutout at Benedictine his last time out, he struck out four and walked one. Sophomore Michael Boehmer tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to close out the game.
Boehmer (4-2) actually closed out both games, earning the win in game one with three innings of scoreless baseball, striking out two. He relieved junior Brandon McCumber, who struck out five in six innings, allowing just two earned runs and four hits.
With game one deadlocked at two and heading to MSOE's final at bat, senior Casey Magyar greeted a new Lakeland pitcher with a lead-off single. Doyle then followed with a deep fly ball to the gap in right-center. He chased Magyar around the bases, winding up at third as Magyar scored without a throw to the plate.
While the Red & White pitchers were effective, so was the Muskie's starter Jeremy Surowiec. He struck out six and worked around seven Raider hits in eight innings on the mound.
Both of MSOE's runs came in the fourth inning after it had loaded the bases with no outs. Surowiec worked around the next two hitters and looked to have escaped any damage, but a dropped throw on a routine ground ball allowed two Raiders to score and take a 2-0 lead.
LC came back to tie it in its next time at the bat in the fifth inning, with Jody Harrison plating a pair of runs with a double to left field.
Doyle finished with six hits on the day, collecting them in six-straight at-bats, including a 4-for-5 effort in game two. Burnikel had five hits on the day, reaching base four times in game two by going 3-for-3 and being hit by a pitch. He scored four runs and drove in four more.
