Box Score 2 FRANKLIN, Wis. – Senior Nick Jablonski and sophomore Garrett Willems each drove in three runs as the MSOE baseball team opened conference play with an 11-4 win over defending NACC Champion Concordia Chicago Sunday afternoon at The Rock Complex.
The Raiders (8-10, 1-1 NACC) then fell to the Cougars (11-6, 1-1 NACC) in game two, 9-3.
After the visitors scored first, MSOE capitalized on five walks to plate five runs, all with two outs, in the second inning.
Senior Casey Magyar followed two walks by ripping an RBI double to right field. Another walk loaded the bases and senior Tyler Doyle and sophomore Jimmy Carrington worked back-to-back walks to force in two more runs. The Cougars made a pitching change and Willems greeted the new hurdler with a two-run single to make it 5-1.
CUC pulled single runs back in the third and fourth innings to make it 5-3, but a three-run fourth inning gave the Raiders an 8-3 advantage. Sophomore Ryan Newman hit a one-out double and scored on Doyle's single through the right side. Two batters later, Willems and Jablonski hit back-to-back RBI singles.
Jablonski had another two-run single in the sixth inning and senior Ryan Miller followed with an RBI single of his own to cap the scoring.
Willems started on the mound, allowing three earned runs over 4.2 innings. Sophomore Michael Boehmer (3-2) earned the win with 4.1 innings of scoreless relief. He scattered three hits and a walk, striking out two. He's now allowed just two earned runs in his last 17.2 innings of work, lowering his season ERA to 2.93.
Connor Brandon homered twice for the Cougars as they avoided the sweep in game two. They scored twice in the first inning, but the Red & White pulled ahead with a run in the second inning and two in the third to pull ahead 3-2.
Sophomore Owen Burnikel drove in the second-inning run with a single, while Carrington and Willems plated runs with RBI ground outs in the third.
CUC rebounded with six unanswered runs over the fourth through seventh innings to put the game out of reach.
Junior Brandon McCumber (1-2) pitched to mixed results, striking out eight in just 4.2 innings of work. But, he allowed six hits and five runs (three earned). Freshman Sam Crawford followed with 2.1 innings of relief and sophomore Trevor Symbal tallied two scoreless innings to close out the game.
Jablonski wrapped out two more hits to drive the offense in the nightcap.
The Raiders now return to action with a doubleheader at Benedictine Tuesday. The games were originally scheduled for last Saturday, but postponed due to inclement weather.
