RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The MSOE post two decisive victories on the final day of the regular season Saturday to secure the No. 3 seed in the NACC Tournament.
The Raiders (8-13, 6-2 NACC) shut out Concordia Chicago 9-0 in the early afternoon, then dropped just one point in an 8-1 win at Dominican. With the wins, they will be the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament and host No. 6 Aurora Tuesday.
Four different players were perfect on the day in senior Tyler Haanen and juniors John Price, Tom Smith and Austin Campbell.
Price and Smith once again teamed at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-0 against CUC and 8-1 vs. Dominican. Against the Cougars, Price at No. 1 and Smith at No. 2 posted identical 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles play. Price then downed his Stars opponent 6-0, 6-2. Smith had a little more trouble against DU, rebounding from a 6-4 loss in set one to close out the victory with 6-2 and 10-2 wins over the final two frames.
Campbell manned No. 3 singles and won 6-1, 6-0 vs. Concordia and 6-0, 6-3 against Dominican. Haanen defeated his first opponent 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and came back in the nightcap, 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 at No. 4. The two were paired in doubles, picking up a pair of 8-0 wins at No. 2 against CUC and No. 3 vs. DU.
Junior Kyle Fassbender entered the lineup at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles in the match with the Stars, teaming with junior Mason Sauder on an 8-1 win, then playing solo and winning 6-0, 6-0.
Concordia Chicago did not field players at No. 3 doubles or in singles play at No. 5 and No. 6.
