Roley Shuts Down BenU With Three-Hit Shutout

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LISLE, Ill. – Junior Jacob Roley threw a three-hit shutout in game two as the MSOE baseball team split a conference doubleheader with Benedictine Tuesday afternoon at The Sports Complex.

The Raiders (9-11, 2-2 NACC) topped the Eagles (8-6, 2-2 NACC) 5-0 with their second three-hit shutout in five games. BenU took the opener 8-3.

Roley (2-2) threw just over 100 pitches in nine innings, striking out four and walking just one. He did not allow more than one base runner in any inning and did not allow a runner past second base. At one point, he retired 13-straight batters from the third to seventh innings.

While Roley dealt on the mound, the MSOE offense provided all of the offense he needed. It struck first with a single run in the third inning as junior Brandon McCumber drove in a run with the third of three-straight singles.

The Raiders then tacked on two in the fifth and two more in the sixth. They capitalized on an error and a walk to put a pair of runners on in the fifth inning. Sophomore Jimmy Carrington, who went 3-for-4 in the game, then stroked a double to the gap in left-centerfield to bring both runs around.

Sophomore Owen Burnikel started a rally in the sixth with a one-out double and moved to third on sophomore Max Kemp's infield single. Senior Casey Magyar then brought Burnikel home when he singled on a squeeze bunt.

Senior Tyler Doyle made it 5-0 when his sacrifice fly to right field brought Kemp in to score.

Roley put together his second complete game in five starts as a Raider. He lowered his earned run average on the season to a scant 1.83 over 34.1 innings of work. The team also got a three-hit shutout March 19 in the second game of a doubleheader with Finlandia. Sophomore Ryan Newman needed just 98 pitches to navigate nine innings with eight strikeouts.

In addition to Carrington's three-hit game, Magyar finished with two hits of his own.

In game one, the Eagles got their bats going early and MSOE did not get started hitting until it was too late. BenU got the scoring started with a run in the first, then scored three times in the third and made it 5-0 with another tally in the fourth.

McCumber and senior Ryan Miller had back-to-back doubles to lead off the sixth inning and get the Red & White on the board. Unfortunately, the home team responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and two more in the seventh to open an 8-1 advantage.

The Raiders did not go quietly, taking advantage of some Benedictine miscues to plate two more runs in the ninth. Burnikel was hit by a pitch to lead off and went to third on a pair of wild pitches. Magyar followed with an RBI single. Two batters later, he came around to score on an error.

Carrington then hit a single and sophomore Garrett Willems walked to load the bases with one out. The Eagles were able to wiggle out of the jam with a shallow fly ball and a strikeout to end the threat.

Miller and Magyar each collected two hits in the opener.

Newman (1-2) got the start on the mound and tossed four innings. Three more Red & White hurlers saw the mound, with freshman Austin Heyman working a perfect ninth to close out the game.

The Raiders return to the diamond Sunday against Lakeland at The Rock Complex.
