Box Score FRANKLIN, Wis. – The MSOE baseball team led 5-0, but could not hold on in falling to Dominican 9-5 in 10 innings Monday afternoon at The Rock Complex.
The Raiders (19-19, 10-8 NACC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, but allowed the Stars (16-20, 9-9 NACC) back in the game with a five-run third inning.
Dominican then won the game with a four-run 10th inning.
With one out in the first inning, MSOE went to work, as six-straight hitters reached base. Sophomore Ryan Newman singled, sophomore Jimmy Carrington doubled and sophomore Garrett Willems walked to load the bases.
Then, three-straight RBI singles through the left side followed from freshman Nick Gross, sophomore Owen Burnikel and senior Ryan Miller. Sophomore Max Kemp made it 4-0 with an RBI ground out.
Willems then drove in the team's fifth run in the second inning, scoring Newman, who had walked and moved to second on a hit batter.
The Stars changed pitchers and the Raiders were unable to adjust. Chance Emlund hurled eight innings in relief to get the win, striking out six and allowing just two base runners on a pair of singles.
Meanwhile, the Dominican offense got going, overcoming a 5-0 deficit against MSOE for the second time in three days with a five-run inning. This time it came in the third inning.
Unlike Saturday when the Red & White prevailed 15-5 with a 10-run inning in response, this time there was no rebuttal.
The Raiders threatened in the ninth inning for a walk-off winner, but the go-ahead run was left stranded on second. In the next half inning, two singles and two doubles to lead off the inning for the Stars plated two runs before an out was recorded. The final nail was then a two-run double two batters later.
Willems got the start on the mound and threw two innings. Burnikel followed with 4.2 innings of outstanding relief. He scattered three hits with a walk and one run allowed, while striking out five.
Sophomore Brandon McCumber (2-3) got the loss, being charged with all four runs in the 10th. He was initially dominant in relief after pitching five innings in the first game vs. DU Saturday before running into trouble.
Newman finished with two hits for MSOE, extending his hitting streak to eight-straight games.
The Raiders close out the regular season with a doubleheader at Rockford Saturday. They currently have a one game lead in the standings on their first-ever NACC Tournament bid, currently sitting sixth, but just one game back of second place.
