RIVER FOREST, Illinois – Junior Carly Grant won both of her singles matches and added a doubles win against Dominican as the MSOE women's tennis team split a pair of conference matches in Illinois Saturday.
The Raiders (2-4, 2-1 NACC) defeated the Stars in the opener 7-2 in the morning, then fell to Aurora in a 5-4 decision in the afternoon.
Grant opened her day pairing with freshman Sammy Soeder for an 8-1 doubles win. Then, in singles play, the duo scored wins in the top two positions. At No. 1, Grant went 6-0, 6-2, while Soeder won 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 slot.
The Red & White came out of doubles with a 2-1 advantage, as sophomore Calie Bonie and freshman Katie Kershaw also scored an 8-1 win at No. 3.
Also in the match, junior Riya Chaudhari, sophomore Kim Baffin and freshman Olivia Boden each posted their first collegiate singles victories. At No. 4, Chaudhari shut out her opponent, 6-0, 6-0, while Baffin won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 and Boden also posted a shutout at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0.
In the afternoon matchup, Bonie was a double winner. She and Boden teamed for an 8-5 doubles victory, then she downed opponent at No. 3 singles for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) win.
Grant suffered a slight injury in doubles play, but was able to shake off a 6-3 first-set loss in singles to claim the second set 6-4 and the tie-breaker 10-5 to upend her Spartan opponent.
Kershaw rounded out the day's winners, giving MSOE another career first. Her 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles was her first collegiate singles win.
The Raiders return to the courts Wednesday, hosting Marian at McKinley Marina.
