Schultz Kicks Women's Soccer into First Place

Box Score

AURORA, Illinois – Senior Missy Schultz scored two late goals to help the MSOE women's soccer team overtake a 2-1 deficit and slip past Aurora Friday evening on the road.

The Raiders (10-7, 8-1 NACC) down the Spartans (6-8, 6-2 NACC) for their eighth-straight win and overtook Dominican (7-0-2, 23 points) for first place in the NACC standings with 24 points with one match remaining for both teams.

Aurora led 2-1 in the second half after pulling ahead with a goal in the 58th minute.

In the 67th minute, MSOE drew a free kick 30 yards from goal, off-center to the right. Schultz stepped up and tucked the set piece inside the far post for the equalizer.

She was back at it just under 10 minutes later when a Raider player was clattered into at the corner of the box, drawing a penalty kick. Schultz stepped up to the penalty spot and buried her second PK of the week, both for game-winners.

The goals capped a whirlwind second half in which the Red & White forged a 10-4 shot advantage and 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the 23rd minute for a short-lived 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, MSOE went on the attack. Freshman Brooke Zidek slotted a centering pass to the top of the box. Senior Melina Lynn ran onto the ball, beat the on-rushing keeper, and slotted it into the open net just 56 seconds after the opening goal.

Sophomore Abbie Lorenz had another strong showing in goal, making six saves for her fifth win in as many starts.

The Raiders finished with a 16-14 shot advantage on the night, including 9-8 in shots on target. The home team did force six first-half corner kicks and finished with the 8-6 edge in that department.

MSOE has just one league match remaining, Wednesday night at Lakeland, but first it takes on No. 19 UW-La Crosse Sunday at Viets Field.
