MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The MSOE men's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2017 season with an 8-1 defeat of Buena Vista Saturday afternoon at Cornell College.
The Raiders (1-3) also took on Cornell College earlier in the day, falling to the Rams 9-0.
For the team's second match, MSOE clicked on all cylinders, opening with a sweep of the doubles points before taking five of the six singles matches.
Four different players were doubles winners on the day. Senior John Price posted his double in the top positions, teaming with senior Tom Smith for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. Then, in singles, he overcame a 6-4 loss in the first set to win after forcing a tiebreaker with a 6-2 win in set two and outlasting his opponent in the tiebreak, 13-11.
Senior Mason Sauder and junior Brad Phoenix won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, then each claimed single wins. Sauder played at No. 3 and prevailed 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile, Phoenix won his No. 5 singles match 6-0, 6-1. Freshman Curt Norton teamed with freshman Michael Korbut for an 8-0 doubles win at No. 3, then shut out his No. 6 singles opponent, 6-0, 6-0.
Junior Ryan Runke rounded out the point-scorers, winning at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-4.
The Raiders return to the court Saturday, hosting matches with Judson and UW-La Crosse at Pleasant Valley in Jackson, Wisconsin.
