Baseball Suffers Sweep against Concordia Moorhead

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUBURNDALE, Florida – Junior Owen Burnikel went 3-for-3 with a home run in game two as the MSOE baseball team dropped a pair of games to Concordia Moorhead Tuesday at the RussMatt Invitational.

The Raiders (1-5) fell to the Cobbers (3-2) 9-3 in game one and 11-2 in the second game.

Burnikel's two-run home run got MSOE on the board and accounted for all of its offense in game two. The team finished with six hits.

Concordia scored single runs in the first and third innings before opening a 6-0 lead after a four-run fourth inning. In the bottom of the inning, junior Jimmy Carrington hit a one-out double and Burnikel, who led the team with six home runs last season, followed with his first long ball of the season to left field to make it a 6-2.

The designated visitors added runs in each of the final three innings to steadily pull away.

Sophomore Matt Mohapp (0-1) got the start and struck out five hitters over 3.0 innings. He was charged with six earned runs but just three were earned. Three other pitchers also worked in the game, including a perfect inning of work for freshman Nathan Tremore.

The Cobbers took an early lead in the opener as well, plating three runs in the first inning.

Senior Brandon McCumber scored the Raiders' first run in the fourth inning to make it 3-1. He led off with a single, moving up bases on junior Matt Melbye's base hit and a fly out. He then came in to score on an error.

Unfortunately, Concordia pulled that run right back in the bottom half of the frame and tacked on five more runs over the fifth and sixth innings.

MSOE did rally in the ninth inning, pushing a pair of runs across the board. Freshman Julian Sonn hit a one-out, two-run home run to left field to capitalize on a lead-off error and make it 11-3. Carrington followed with a single but the Red & White could not add to its total any more.

Sonn, Carrington, McCumber, and Melbye each collected two hits in the game for the Raiders.

McCumber (0-1) made the start on the mound and struck out three batters in 4.1 innings. He allowed four earned runs.

MSOE takes a day off Wednesday before resuming play down in Florida with a single game Thursday morning against Rose-Hulman. First pitch scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
