Men's Tennis Clinches Share of NACC Crown at CUW

MEQUON, Wisconsin – The MSOE men's tennis team went on the road and defeated Concordia Wisconsin to clinch at least a share of the NACC regular season championship Tuesday afternoon at the CUW Tennis Courts.

The Raiders (8-16, 7-1 NACC) put an end to the Falcons' (16-6, 5-1 NACC) perfect league record and secured a share of their first league title since 2014.

MSOE is the first league school to finish its schedule and will await CUW and Edgewood finishing their seasons for NACC Tournament seeds. Both the Falcons and Eagles have one loss each with two matches yet to be played.

Senior Austin Campbell clinched the overall match at No. 4 singles, overcoming a 4-1 deficit in the final tie-break set to win 6-0, 6-7 (8-10), 6-4.

Doubles play was hard-fought with the home team coming away with a 2-1 advantage. The Red & White scored a win at No. 3 with senior Mason Sauder and junior Brad Phoenix scoring an 8-4 win. In the No. 2 position, senior Tom Smith and junior Ryan Runke fell in a tie-break 9-8 (9-7).

The Raiders then scored 4-of-6 points during the singles competition to claim the match.

Senior John Price set the tone at No. 1 with a 6-4, 6-4 win and freshman Luke Nelson scored another straight-sets win at No. 3, 6-3, 6-4. Runke also won his match at No. 6 by a score of 6-3, 7-5 for a 4-3 advantage pending the outcome of a pair of three-set matches at No. 4 and No. 5.

In the remaining match, senior Tyler Haanen rebounded from a 6-1 loss in the opening set to force a third set with a 6-3 win. CUW then scored the point, 6-1, in the third.

The 2017 NACC Tournament starts May 1 with first round matches at campus sites before the remaining seeds play May 7 in Madison.
